This is a warning before you scroll down - if you're not a falconer, you may not like these; if you choose to go look anyway, we don't want to hear how you, as a horse person, are not amused. Falconry cartoons are not for the PETA folks. Falconry itself is an old, old sport - falcons and hawks were used to catch small game for dinner. These days the average hawk or falcon's job is to feed himself and catch enough to stash in the freezer for the non-flying days. Falconers think nothing of driving miles to a good field for their bird to hunt; many also have dogs to help "beat the bushes" to see what runs out. Sometimes the bird goes & sits in a tree & falls on an unlucky lizard or snake or picks her toes. And while the description for this page - falconry cartoons - seems to be the "duh!" explanation, let me clarify. You know how non-horse people tend to think we're rather obsessed with horses and anything pertaining to them? Horses, to non-horse people, are large, smelly creatures who bite & step all over your feet. They give us weird looks in the supermarket with our mucky boots & hay on on our jackets & our carts full of 25 lb bags of carrots. Falconers also tend to be misunderstood. Their best days are when their bird catches a rabbit, or a duck, or almost anything, but the thrill of the chase - letting your bird fly free, with the option of it leaving you at any time - is the best part, even if the bird misses everything she chases or comes home with a rat or a lizard. See, while we look at rabbits as furry & cute, the average falconer looks at them as food for the bird. They buy "chicksicles" from the local poultry farm for those times when the bird is molting or hasn't caught anything and think nothing of storing them in the freezer next to the ice cream - and that road kill from last week. So when some of cartoons here seem really rude, please remember they have a different outlook on life than we do, their sense of humor is definitely different, and to each to his own . . .

John (Hawk) and Bullet, the Harris Hawk he's had since he was an eyas (baby bird). Bullet is now 19 (2008) and is still flying strong and catching game. John has lost him twice - once during the Cedar fire in 2003 and once when he escaped from his weathering area and went exploring. Twice he's returned to John, after being gone at least a week both times. Yes, John kisses his bird, just like we kiss our horses. :)
